The LMS ‘Patriot’ Class 4-6-0 locomotives, designed by Henry Fowler, were developed as improved successors to the LNWR ‘Large Claughton’ Class for express passenger services. Built at both Crewe and Derby Works between 1930 and 1934, a total of 52 locomotives entered service. ‘Holyhead’, completed at Crewe in September 1932 as No. 5983 and later renumbered 5514 in 1938, exemplified the class’s power and versatility. In 1947 it received a Stanier taper boiler, becoming BR No. 45514 after nationalisation. Withdrawn from service at Derby in May 1961, it was notable as the first of the rebuilt ‘Patriot’ Class locomotives to be retired, marking the end of an era for LMS express power.
