Effects of Spur Gear Changes

Larger Spur
Increased acceleration
Decreased top speed
Use on smaller tracks for more punch
Use with larger pinion to get more overall torque, while maintaining the same gear ratio

Smaller Spur
Decreases acceleration, but smoother
Increases top speed
