The U.S. Navy's battleship South Dakota was the name ship of her class.
Equipped with three 45-caliber 40.6cm triple-turret guns, she was able to sail at a speed of 27 knots, comparable to the Yamato-class battleships. She was completed in March 1942, and took part in the Battle of Santa Cruz that October and the Third Battle of Solomon in mid-November; she was bombed and damaged in the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944. She also participated in the Battle of Okinawa, and earned 13 Service Stars for these military achievements.
